Financial Aid Toolkit

September 12, 2011

Do you have everything in place for the fall quarter?  Read the information below to find out if you are on track to receive your financial aid.

Step OneAccept or Decline your awards on MyUCSC.  If there are no awards posted, check the To Do List to confirm you have submitted a FAFSA and completed all items requested by the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office.  Applications/documents submitted recently will be reviewed in the order they were received.

Step 2Enroll in classes.  Undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 6 units before financial aid will credit your student account.  Graduate students must be enrolled in at least 5 units.  Aid will be adjusted after the deadline to add/drop classes for undergraduate students not enrolled in at least 12 units.

step3If you are accepting Federal Direct Subsidized and/or Unsubsidized loans and are a first time borrower, you must complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) and Entrance Counseling by visiting studentloans.gov.  If you are unsure if you have completed these requirements, you can check the status at studentloans.gov. Your loan will not disburse to your student account if these steps are not completed.

step4If you have accepted a Federal Perkins Loan, be sure you complete and submit your Master Promissory Note (MPN) on MyUCSC. There is a link to the MPN next to the Federal Perkins Loan award.  To complete the required Entrance Counseling go to go ACS Perkins. Your loan will not disburse to your student account if these steps are not completed.

step5Unsure about how much you need to pay towards your bill?  If your pending/anticipated aid is MORE than your outstanding charges/account balance, you do not need to pay anything.  Financial aid will credit before the bill due date.  If your pending/anticipated aid total is LESS than your account balance, simply pay the difference.

number 6Will you receive an aid refund to help with books or rent off-campus?  If your total accepted aid is MORE than your account balance, a refund will be issued to you the first week of the quarter.  To expedite this refund, sign up for Direct Deposit to your bank account on MyUCSC.  Signing up is EASY!  If you do not sign up for direct deposit, a check will be mailed to your mailing address.  Mail can take up to 2 weeks!
