Federal Perkins Loans

Loans made through the Federal Perkins Loan Program are low-interest federal student loans for undergraduate and graduate students with exceptional financial need.

Step 1:  Accept your loan on MyUCSC student portal: https://my.ucsc.edu

Step 2: Complete the Perkins Loan Entrance Counseling

Step 3: Sign a Federal Perkins Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN). There is a link to the promissory note from the financial aid Award Summary page in your MyUCSC portal.  If you accept a Perkins Loan, you should see a link called “Sign Promissory Note” under the loan details for the Perkins Loan.

Step 4: You will also need to sign your Master Promissory Note in person. Please stop by the Student Business Services Office to sign your Master Promissory Note.

Eligibility Requirements
  • You must file your FAFSA
  • You must be enrolled at least half-time in a degree of certificate program at a participating school
  • You must be a permanent resident or U.S. Citizen
  • Only available to first year students
  • Available to undergraduate students who have financial need
Perkins Loan Terms
  • Loan does not accrue interest for students enrolled half-time or more
  • 5% annual interest rate
  • 9 month grace period
  • Does not require a credit check
  • No processing fees
  • Limited availability
