Financial Aid for Study Abroad and Away Programs
Studying abroad or away is an exciting part of your UC Santa Cruz experience, and financial aid can help make it possible. If you participate in an approved UC program, your financial aid can be applied to help cover costs.
Funding Your UC Study Abroad or Away Experience
Financial Aid is available to UCSC students who study abroad or away through a UC program. UC study abroad/away programs include UCEAP, UCSC Exchanges, UCSC Global Seminars, UCSC Global Virtual Internships, UC Washington Program (UCDC), and Other UC programs. If enrolled in a UC program, students can use their financial aid to help cover the costs. Students participating in independent programs are not eligible for financial aid, but can apply for private funding.
The Financial Aid and Scholarship Office determines your financial aid eligibility for the program you are admitted to using the total estimated cost of attendance.
Scholarships for Study Abroad/Away
There are dozens of scholarship opportunities to consider applying for.
Study Abroad Calculator
The Study Abroad Calculator provides a financial aid estimate for undergraduate students planning to participate in a study abroad program through UCEAP or UCSC Global Learning. By answering a few questions, you’ll receive an estimate of your total grant. Students in study abroad programs will also be considered for student loans and/or a Parent PLUS Loan (if applicable) to cover unmet costs.
To use the calculator, you’ll need your Student Aid Index (SAI) from your 2024–25 FAFSA or Dream Application. The tool generates estimates for 2024–25 quarter, semester, and academic year programs. Estimates may differ from your final awards if your information is incorrect, and all awards depend on funding availability. These are not actual award amounts.
Summer program estimates will be available in January.
Request a Visa Letters
Some programs require a letter stating your finances and aid to accompany your application for an entry visa to your host country. If this is the case, please complete our Visa Letter Request Form and email it to finaid.specialprograms@ucsc.edu.

Scholarship Certifications
Some scholarship agencies may require students to submit an aid estimate along with their scholarship applications and/or require our office to certify scholarship applications for students. To be prepared, we encourage students to:
- Request an aid estimate for their program
- Complete the OAS Authorization to Release Information Form and email it to finaid.specialprograms.edu. Without this form on file, we cannot provide any financial aid related information to the scholarship agency. The OAS Authorization to Release Information Form is not available on MyAid Verify.
